Wow

March 6th, 2008

I know the site has been on a bit of a hiatus because I was busy moving.  I now live in San Francisco and life is great — especially because the Sharks are ripping it up!!

The addition of Campbell has redefined the Sharks’ blue line.

The best things right now about the team are:

1) Resiliency:  The Sharks keep going.  They aren’t sitting on leads and can battle back from adversity within a game.

2) Cheechoo and Marleau are heating up at the right time.  In fact, Cheech is downright HOT over the last 23 games.  Only Alexander the Great has scored more goals than him since the end of January.

3) All the pieces are coming together and the Sharks seem to be turning the corner and playing the way they want to play.

Anyhow, don’t know when I’ll post next but the Sharks are keeping things very exciting!

Will Shelley be used in the playoffs?

January 30th, 2008

It’s hard to say what kind of minutes Ron Wilson will give Jody Shelley. He has very similar career numbers as former Sharks enforcer, Scott Parker. In 380 career games, Shelley has 1025 PIM and 29 points while Parker has amounted 21 points and 692 PIM in 300 games. Shelley has appeared in 31 games this year with Columbus while Parker has played just 17. But enough with the stats.

How will Ron Wilson use Shelley? Parker never saw action in a playoff game as a Shark. But the Sharks were a much different team than they are today. They used to rely on a lethal offense and dominating play at home. This year is just the opposite; their new defensive style of play has led to one of the best road records in the league.

How does Shelley fit in to the picture? Well, time will tell. Hell, with Ron Wilson’s inability to keep any line combos (although, I will admit it has been more stable now than in the earlier portions of this season and all of last season), we may see Shelley on the first line “creating space for Big Joe”. While I’m being facetious, it’s really not crazy to think that Shelley will see 10 minutes a game during the playoffs, given the new Sharks style of play.

Course, I could be wrong and then it’d just be same ol’ shit, different day.

No Love for Mitchell

January 16th, 2008

2008 Western Conference YoungStars Team
Defensemen: Alexander Edler (VAN), Erik Johnson (STL), Jackson Johnson (LA), Matt Niskanen (DAL)
Forwards: Sam Gagner (EDM), Patrick Kane (CHI), Peter Mueller (PHX), David Perron (STL)

2008 Eastern Conference YoungStars Team
Defensemen: Tobias Enstrom (ATL), Kris Letang (PIT), Mike Lundin (TB), Marc Staal (NYR)
Forwards: Nicklas Backstrom (WSH), Brandon Dubinsky (NY Rangers), Tyler Kennedy (PIT), Milan Lucic (BOS)

You’ll notice that the above roster for the Young Stars game is missing Sharks fan favorite, Torrey Mitchell.  I don’t think many people, except for me of course (seriously), expected Mitchell to have such a strong rookie campaign, let alone make it out of camp with a roster spot.  The Grier/Mitchell unit has not only been the best Sharks’ best penalty killing unit this year, but also one of the best in the league.

Not to take anything away from the other rooks’ but I think Mitchell got snubbed.  Undoubtedly, if the rookie game wasn’t 3 v 3 with only 8 players a side, Mitchell would surely have a spot.

Looking Closely at the AO deal

January 16th, 2008

Mirtle has done an incredible job breaking down the liklihood that Alexander Ovechkin will be a contributer to the Caps throughout his whole contract, that is, until he is 35-years old.

Check out his blog post on the subject.  He deserves it.
